Successful conclusion of "International Conference on Bilateral Investment Agreements: Protection, Promotion, and Development of International Investment"

The "International Conference on Bilateral Investment Agreements: Protection, Promotion, and Development of International Investment," organized by Department of Investment Services, Ministry of Economic Affairs, R.O.C. and co-organized by LCS & Partners and Asian Center for WTO & International Health Law and Policy, College of Law, National Taiwan University on November 28 and 29, 2007 was ended with fruitful conclusion. Scholars and experts from the United States, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan discussed the important issues related to Bilateral Investment Agreements (the "BIAs"), including the development of BIAs and economic aspects, investment treatment and protection, dispute settlement and environment, public health and human rights, from both academic and practical perspectives. Through the dialogue among participants, issues were discussed more deeply and comprehensively. With this successful conference as a start, it is expected the remaining unsolved but meaningful issues will be further developed in the future.

Correspondingly, the initiation for this forum intends to further strengthen Taiwan’s business community’s awareness, understanding, and implementation of social responsibility norms. The Forum is designed in four major sessions as follows.

Never before have so many Taiwan business leaders gathered in one place to share their knowledge and experiences on social concern and corporate responsibility. In a turbulent and rapidly changing world, how can Taiwan companies build a society based on the principles of concern, action and sincerity?

2003 IDIC CSR project

This project includes three major tasks: (1) Holding three conferences on the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. The conferences, entitled “Perspectives on New Pressures on Overseas Investment ?Responding to the Challenges and Opportunities in Corporate Globalization,?were held in Taichung, Taipei, and Kaohsiung on July 23, September 3 and September 24, 2003. (2) Conducting a CSR survey of multinationals in Taiwan, including over 2,000 senior executives from Taiwan’s top 500 companies and a total of 1,155 publicly traded corporations. (3) Conducting 10 interviews of CEOs or other senior executives of multinationals in Taiwan on CSR issues.

2003 Taiwan SRI forum

On October 24, 2003, the "2003 Conference on Sustainable and Socially Responsible Investment?was held at the Taipei Grand Formosa Regent hotel. The conference focused on the role of the financial industry in the promotion of sustainable development -- especially the asset management and investment segments of the industry -- and on methods and strategies for launching SRI products in Taiwan. This conference was sponsored by the Business Council on Sustainable Development and the Association for Sustainable and Responsible Investment in Asia (ASrIA), and was co-sponsored by the Republic of China Bankers Association, the Industrial Development & Investment Center and the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

2003 Taiwan CSR Survey

A nationwide corporate social responsibility (CSR) survey has been conducted recently. There were more than two thousands CEOs and top management personnel of Taiwan's companies were involved. This survey was part of a CSR study, commissioned by the Industrial Development & Investment Center (IDIC), Ministry of Economic Affair, and its aim was to explore the difference of the attitude and willingness to implement CSR practices between Taiwan's business leaders and those leaders of global multi-national companies (MNCs).

Taiwan Sustainability reporting forum
